University
of New Brunswick (UNB) has been associated with the
Ministry of Education since 1985 when the first Bhutanese
scholars studied there under the World University Services
of Canada (WUSC) scholarship. After WUSC withdrew from
Bhutan in 1992 the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi
took over the office. Because of UNB’s long association
with Bhutan, the Bhutanese government requested Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) to continue its
assistance to the education sector through UNB’s education
faculty.
Since then the association has linked Bhutan's education
system with UNB's Faculty of Education through different
five year projects. The past projects
Phase
I and Phase II of Education
Institution Strengthening in Bhutan
(EISB) have provided
scholarships and work attachments for Bhutanese educators,
long and short-term consultants for Bhutan's Education
Division.
The projects aimed to strengthen the capacity of teacher
training institutes in Bhutan, upgrade the academic
background of secondary-school teachers and post-secondary
lecturers, and enhance the capacity of the Curriculum and
Professional Support Services and the Bhutan Board of
Examinations.
The
new five year project
“ The Strengthening Support to
Education in Bhutan
(SSEB) will focus on
strengthening education in Bhutan through sustainable
development of human resources. The project will seek to
enable Bhutan to improve gender- sensitive curriculum
leadership and instructional delivery system in primary
and secondary English language, primary mathematics and
engineering. The project will also support the CCO to
provide administrative and logistical support services.
