Radio
Support for Remote Schools:-
The Education Division has purchased 167 radio cassette
players and they are being distributed to the rural primary
schools along with 5 blank cassette tapes. This allows these
remote schools to have access to the world via short wave
as well to programs on the Bhutan Broadcasting Service (BBS)
especially the new program being produced by the Education
Division, A Bhutan Calling Teachers". Production of this
program was also given assistance under this project through
the provision of two computers and a printer for the Radio
Unit in the Education Division. The remaining funds were used
to purchase 15 more radio cassette players and distributed
to newly established schools.
Teacher/Librarian
Training Project:-
The Librarian from the National Institute of Education in
Bhutan completed his six-week study tour in Canada. On his
return he and Mr. Kinzang Dorji from the Library Development
Unit of CAPSD visited the teacher-librarians across the
country to follow up on the instructions they received during
their in service training. They then ran another training
workshop which was funded by UNICEF for 50 more teachers.
The remaining funds were spent on a computer for the NIE
library resource centre.
High
School Library (II):-
Three newly upgraded High Schools in Tsirang, Geylephug,
and Mongar districts have been selected to receive library
books through this project. Damphu High School and Gelyphug
High School both have principals who studied in Canada and
received M.Ed.=s in the teaching of English. The Head of
Aid, Mr. Steve Gibbons, visited Damphu High School to announce
the project on the occasion of A Reading Week@ in November,
1998. The books were ordered by the Library Unit of CAPSS
and were delivered to the schools end of August, 1999.There
was a minor change to the project. As Geylephug High School
received books rather than Bajothang as it is in greater
need. The excess funds covered the small over run on BH66
(see below).
Strengthening
of the Father Mackey Computer Centre:-
Sherubtse College has established a Computer Centre, with
assistance from CIDA through the UNB linkage project, as
a memorial to Father W. Mackey and began a new degree program
in July1999, Bachelors of Computer Applications (BCA). Through
the project the college procured five computers for the
centre and one laptop . The lab technician was sent for
training to up grade his skills to Kathmandu to work with
the technician at ICMOD for one month.
Counselling
Guide Books for Schools:-
This project has helped the Youth Guidance & Counselling
Division to print resource materials for career counselling.
A part of the budget has been used for the printing of 1000
copies of the book: "A Light on Your Career Path -
Vol. II". These books have been distributed to all
the schools. The rest of the money was spent to reprint
Volume I and other documents for the Counselling Division
all of which are used by the 80 school counsellor who have
been trained through winter workshops in counselling given
by Dr. John Stewart from the University New Brunswick whose
work in Bhutan was also funded by CIDA through the UNB -
Bhutan Project.
Local
Book Production Unit in Zhemgang:-
Project Status: The equipment for the book
production unit has been ordered and half has been supplied.
The school year has just started and the student writers
are very excited about the project. They hope to have the
first locally made books to the schools by September 2001.

Provision
on Typewriters and Duplicators to Primary Schools
Project Status:-
Duplicators and typewriters
for 18 community schools in four remote Dzongkhags have
been purchased and distributed. This means that the teachers
in these schools can produce quality teaching material.
Other schools are now being selected to use the remainder
of the funds.

Enhancing
the Teaching and Learning of Science
Project Status:
All the science equipment
originally ordered has now been supplied to the two newly
up-graded High Schools in Ranjung and Samdrup Jongkhar in
Eastern Bhutan. The schools have now been ask to submitted
their next list of equipment by August 2001. The Principals
of both these High Schools study under CIDA fellowships
at the University of New Brunswick. During the winter break
the project funded a workshop for high school lab assistants.
This training will help the valuable lab equipment be used
more effectively and safely.

Enhancing
the Teaching and Learning of Science:-
Status of Project: 85% completed. Initially this
project was to cover the cost of science equipment supply
to three high schools, Daga, Nganglam, and Tangmachu. Since
then CAPSD has revised the equipment list for all levels.
With the new list the funds will be able to cover the cost
of equipment for only one school. Therefore, through this
project science equipment for Tangmachu High School has
been ordered and delivered to the school . The second half
of the equipment will now be ordered for the school. Other
funding has been founded for the other two schools originally
identified to also receive assistance.

Repair
and Maintenance of Office Equipment in Rural Schools:-
Status of Project: The TVES has sent out a questionnaire
to all schools with regard to repair needs of equipment
in their schools. It was decided that the repair program
would be based out of the Royal Technical Institute (RTI).
One of the instructors from the institute, Mr. Tamang, went
to India for work attachment training and then came back
and ran two workshops for teachers and support staff on
typewriter and duplicating machine repair. The workshops
were very successful and many school typewriters and duplicating
machine were repaired. Mr. David Spring from CIDA Head quarters
visited a third workshop held in Jan 2000 which was held
in Thimphu. The remaining funds will be used to purchase
spare parts once the DEO's have determined what is needed
in the field.

Improving the Monitoring and Supervision of School Exams
Status of Project: A four wheel drive Hilux
truck arrived in July 1998. The Bhutan Board of Exams has
begun work on the handbook on school based assessment. The
remaining funds will be used to cover the printing costs
fund workshops once the handbook is ready.

High
School Science Equipment (II)
Status of Project: Two newly up graded High Schools
in Ha and Bajothang as received Science Equipment through
this project. The CAPSD science curriculum officer, who
has a M.Ed. in the teaching of science, will pay special
attention to assisting these schools set up their labs and
will ensure that the staff receives any extra training that
is required to run the labs effectively and safely. The
equipment was delivered to the schools by January 2000.
During Mr. David Springs to Bhutan visit we visited Bajothang
High School and the glassware had just arrived. The first
order of chemicals arrived in the spring of 2001 and the
second order of chemicals will be placed shortly.

Establishment
of the Youth Development Fund
Status of Project: 70 % complete. A local
consultant was hired for to prepare a background report
for the establishment of the Youth Development Fund. The
project funded the launch of the YDF in June 1999 and the
next step was to design a brochure to be used for fund raising.
This was printed in Bangkok and was ready in time to distribute
at the Bhutan's Donor Round Table Meeting in November 2001

Bumthang
Community Schools Project
Status of Project:
The money has just been released
The District Education Officer is presently organizing
the procurement of the items in the start up package for
the three new community schools in Bumthang.

Support
of Master Teachers in Zhemgang
Project Status:
This project will provide
"Master teachers" (who have been to Canada for
the Teacher Work Attachment Program) with resources to make
teaching aids for their schools. The money was released
to Bhutan in April 2000. The Zhemgang District Education
Officer organized the procurement of a Portable OHP, paper
cutter, and laminating machines for the head quarters. In
addition, he also arranged the procurement of resources
for the sixteen schools under the Zhemgang Dzongkhag. These
resources include steel trunks, scissors, marker and sketch
pens, chart papers, glue, flannel cloth, watercolour, pencil
sharpeners and rulers. Resource books and further supplies
are in the process of being ordered.
