38-10-BH-74 Solar Power for Remote Schools:

Project Description: This project will provide solar power to four schools in the remotest villages in the Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag. The schools, all of which were established in the 1990s, are:
1. Minjiwoong Junior High School (established 1991)
2. Zanthey Community School (established 1992)
3. Dungmanma Community School (established 1995)
4. Louri Primary School (established 1997)
All these schools are located at about one to three days' walk from the nearest motor road. In spite of this, the enrolment has been increasing yearly.

The main reason for proposing this project was that even after the commission of the Kurichu Hydro Power, it was unlikely that these regions would get electricity in the near future. The terrain is too difficult to build power grids for the supply of electricity.

It is estimated that 28 solar sets will be needed for the four schools. The budget will include the cost of the solar sets and accessories and their installation. Each school's support staff will be trained to maintain the equipment and be responsible for its functioning. Furthermore, the school will sign contracts with the suppliers of the solar sets for timely maintenance of the equipment. A provision in the annual school budget will meet the maintenance costs.
